The games that are truly adored are more flawed, but have features that make the flaws forgivable. If you’re just talking about the things that make an adventure game good - an engaging story, a wide variety of interesting puzzles, a number of different ways to complete the game - this one wins out. ![]() It’s interesting - if we were trying to pick the best traditional point-and-click adventure game, I think we could make the most solid case for this game. Most of what you know about adventure games was codified here, and it all holds up amazingly well. Not much needs to be said about this game, but, yes, it really is that good. (Also, if you can, get the original, unvoiced, 16-color version it runs in ScummVM, and is better than the CD re-release.) I hope to someday explain how and why I love it so much, but play it - you can get through it in an afternoon. The game has no fetch quests, no inventory, no dialogue trees. All the music is Tchaikovsky, all the spells are sequences of notes you learn, write in a book, and perform yourself. It’s an out-and-out fantasy that takes more from the libretto from Swan Lake than it does from Tolkien or fairy tales. I can’t entirely justify my love for this game, but if I had to pick an absolute favorite game, I can’t think of one I love more. So here’s a compendium of adventure games I think are good, sectioned such that it’s easy to navigate to what you’re looking for.
